About 65W AC Adapters
An AC adapter, “AC” being alternating current, is a device that is plugged to an AC source at one end—in this case, your wall outlet/socket—and plugged into a DC device (“DC” meaning direct current) at the other end—in this case, your laptop. The wall socket is what you would call your input, and your laptop, the output.
To familiarize you more and AC and DC currents, just think of it as AC being the type of current found in residences and businesses, and DC being the type of current supplied by batteries. Anything that can be powered by batteries—cars, flashlights, music players, and, more importantly in this case, laptops—run on direct current.
Remember, watts or wattage is related to power. A 65-watt adapter delivers 65 watts of constant power. The wattage rating from the AC source to the DC device does not change. In this scenario, it is more important to note the voltage values.
Think of voltage as a type of electricity.
In a laptop adapter, there is once again an input voltage and an output voltage. Input voltage is the voltage of your home’s electricity. This is usually standardized per country, and commonly comes as 110v and 220v variants. In the AC adapters of today, a neat and very practical “auto-volt” feature usually comes standard. What this means is that you need not worry about the input voltage of your adapter, because it will automatically adjust to what it is being fed—whether it is 110v, 120v, 220v, etc.
The output voltage is what you should look more into. Based on our research, we have come across two standard output voltages associated with 65-watt adapters. 18.5v adapters are used by HP (Hewlett-Packard) laptops, and 19.5v adapters are used by Dell. HP and Compaq, basically being the same company, use the same adapters (which is the reason why you use an HP adapter for your Compaq laptop).
A hopefully-useful tip
If you are in the market for a replacement adapter, consider buying two. Not only will you have another spare, you can also permanently leave one in your house, and the other in your workplace—I’m sure you know the hassles of lugging your adapter from one place to another.
Finding a replacement 65W AC Adapter
The good news is, original replacement adapters are abundantly available. First things first, check your unit’s warranty. If it is still active, use it.
On the contrary, below are some guidelines we have compiled.
Know your laptop’s exact model
Other than knowing just the series of your laptop—for example, Presario for Compaq—know its exact model number or code. For example, a B1256TU is a Compaq Presario, as well as being a Compaq B1200 series laptop.
Find out the code for your adapter
Something should be written on your adapter. Something that says something about its model and code is usually printed on the underside sticker. With this information, you can often skip the tip mentioned above.
Think before going generic
Generic, different-brand adapters are available in the market. They cost less. I would normally advise against it, but it’s being by more people everyday. Figure out how much you save on going generic and if you really need that savings. Lastly, when in doubt, read product reviews.
